Even after a professional cleaning, a little maintenance goes a long way during the busy holiday season.

Put a mat at every entrance. A simple doormat catches the bulk of dirt and moisture before it ever reaches your area rug. This one habit alone can dramatically extend the time between professional cleanings.

Blot spills immediately — never rub. When a glass of red wine or a plate of cranberry sauce ends up on your rug, grab a clean white cloth and blot from the outside in. Rubbing spreads the stain and pushes it deeper into the fibers.

Rotate your rug if possible. High-traffic areas wear unevenly. Rotating your rug 180 degrees every few months distributes the wear and keeps it looking newer longer.

Vacuum regularly, but gently. During the holidays, aim to vacuum your area rugs once or twice a week. Use a low-suction setting and avoid vacuuming the fringe — it can cause fraying over time.
